National Parks MCP server
Ask your AI about U.S. national parks, alerts, campgrounds, visitor centers and events.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to the official U.S. National Park Service information. Once it is set up, you can just ask questions in plain English about parks, closures, campgrounds, visitor centers and events. It is handy for anyone planning a trip or curious about a park.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an outside service. This one connects your AI to the National Park Service, so it can look up real park information for you. You ask in normal words, and the AI uses this helper behind the scenes to fetch the answer.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something like which parks are in Colorado or whether Yosemite has any closures right now. The AI passes your question to this helper. The helper talks to the National Park Service and pulls back the matching information. Then the AI writes it up for you in the chat as a clear answer. You never have to visit the NPS website yourself unless you want to.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Search for national parks by state, name or activity
- Get details about a specific park like fees, hours and contacts
- Check current alerts, closures and hazards at parks
- Find visitor centers and their opening hours
- Look up campgrounds and what amenities they have
- Find upcoming events at a park on certain dates
Try asking your AI
- “Tell me about national parks in Colorado.”
- “What's the entrance fee for Yellowstone National Park?”
- “Are there any closures or alerts at Yosemite right now?”
- “Are there any campgrounds with electrical hookups in Zion National Park?”
What it gives back to you
You get back plain answers in the chat, often as a short list or a few paragraphs. For example, a list of parks with a sentence about each, or the fees and hours for one park. Alerts come back as short notices about closures or hazards. Campground and event results include names, dates and useful details.
Before you start
What you need
- A free API key from the National Park Service Developer Portal (a kind of password that lets the helper ask NPS for data)
- The Claude desktop app or another AI app that supports MCP servers
- Node.js installed on your computer (the helper runs with npx)
Good to know
It only reads public National Park Service information, so it cannot change or book anything for you.
