Visual Studio MCP server

by LadislavSopko

Lets your AI read your C# code the way Visual Studio does, and even debug it while it runs.

This is a free add-on for Visual Studio, the program many people use to write C# code. It lets your AI assistant look at your code the smart way, the same way Visual Studio's own Go to Definition and Find All References work. It is handy if you write C# and want your AI to stop guessing from text searches.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat and read text. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another program. This helper lives inside Visual Studio and connects your AI to Visual Studio's own code reader, so the AI can look up real symbols, references and call paths in your project. You ask in plain words, and the AI uses this helper to get the right answer instead of guessing.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something about your code, like where a class is defined or who calls a method. The AI sends that question to this helper, which is running inside Visual Studio. The helper asks Visual Studio's code reader, which understands your whole project. Visual Studio sends back the exact answer, and the AI shows it to you in the chat. It can also run builds, run your tests, and even pause your program at a breakpoint so your AI can look at real values while it runs.

What you can do with it

  • Find a class, method or property by name and get one exact answer
  • See where a symbol is defined and everywhere it is used
  • Look at the full inheritance tree, including interfaces
  • See which methods call a method, and which methods it calls
  • Rename a symbol safely across the whole project
  • Build the project and read the errors and warnings
  • Run your tests and check the results
  • Set breakpoints and inspect variables while your program runs

Try asking your AI

  • “Find the class WhisperFactory and tell me which file and line it is in”
  • “Rename ProcessDocument to ProcessDocumentSafe everywhere”
  • “What implements IDocumentService?”
  • “Why is ProcessOrder returning null? Set a breakpoint and look at the values”

What it gives back to you

You get plain answers in the chat: file names and line numbers, lists of references, inheritance trees, call graphs, build errors, test results, or the values of variables at a breakpoint. When it renames something, it tells you how many places it changed. Everything shows up as normal text you can read and copy.

Before you start

What you need

  • Visual Studio 2022 (17.13 or newer) or Visual Studio 2026, on Windows
  • The MCP AI Server extension, installed from the Visual Studio Marketplace
  • Your .NET solution open in Visual Studio
  • An AI tool that supports MCP, like Claude Desktop or Claude Code

Good to know

It can change your code, so a rename or a build touches real files in your project, and the debugging tools can start, pause and stop your running program.

Install it with your AI

Add Visual Studio MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Visual Studio MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
