code-to-tree MCP server

by micl2e2

Let your AI turn source code into a structured tree so it can read and explain code more accurately.

code-to-tree is a small helper program that lets your AI read source code in a more structured way. Instead of just seeing a wall of text, your AI gets a tree-shaped map of the code. It is handy for anyone who asks an AI to explain, review, or explore code.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using the words you type. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something outside the chat. This one gives your AI the skill of turning source code into an AST, which is a tree-shaped map of the code. Once it is connected, your AI can look at code in that structured way and answer questions about it more accurately.

What this MCP server does

You paste some source code into the chat and ask your AI a question about it. Your AI sends the code to this helper program on your computer. The helper reads the code and builds a tree-shaped map of it, called an AST. That map shows how the pieces of the code fit together, like functions, loops, and variables. Your AI then uses that map to give you a clearer answer.

What you can do with it

  • Turn a piece of source code into a tree-shaped map
  • Help your AI explain what a function or block of code does
  • Spot how parts of the code are nested inside each other
  • Work with code in C, C++, Rust, Ruby, Go, Java, and Python
  • Answer questions about code structure more accurately

Try asking your AI

  • “Here is a Python function. Can you explain what it does step by step?”
  • “Turn this C code into a tree and tell me where the loops are.”
  • “Look at this Go file and list the functions it defines.”
  • “What does this Rust snippet do? Walk me through it.”

What it gives back to you

You get back a written answer from your AI, based on the tree it built from your code. It might be an explanation, a list of functions, or a summary of how the code is organized. The tree itself is used behind the scenes, so you mostly see the AI's plain-language reply in the chat.

Before you start

What you need

  • The code-to-tree program file on your computer (download it from the GitHub releases page)
  • The Claude desktop app or another app that supports MCP servers
  • A small edit to your app's configuration file to point at the program

Good to know

It reads the code you send it, so avoid pasting anything private or secret unless you are okay with your AI seeing it.

Install it with your AI

Add code-to-tree MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check code-to-tree MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
