KNX / ETS6 assistant MCP server

by NickoScope

Let your AI read and check your KNX project files, then write reports, ETS exports and Home Assistant config.

This is a helper for people who work with KNX building automation projects in ETS5 or ETS6. It lets your AI open a project file, check it for common mistakes, and produce documents like reports and Home Assistant settings. It is handy if you plan, audit or hand over KNX installations and want a second pair of eyes.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to KNX project files, so it can read a .knxproj file and work with what is inside. It never touches the live KNX bus, it only looks at the project file on your computer.

What this MCP server does

You point your AI at a KNX project file, and it uses this helper to read everything inside. The helper checks the group addresses, names, data types and command and status pairs, and finds things that look wrong or missing. It can also take a plain equipment list and build a full group-address structure from it. Then it writes the results as files you can use, like an ETS import file, a readable report, or Home Assistant settings. You review everything before it goes anywhere near a real installation.

What you can do with it

  • Read a password-protected ETS5 or ETS6 project file and list what is inside
  • Check naming, data types, command and status pairs, and KNX Secure setup
  • Suggest fixes like a missing status address or a wrong data type
  • Turn an equipment list into a full group-address structure
  • Generate ETS-importable XML and CSV files
  • Create Home Assistant settings for lights, covers, climate and sensors
  • Compare two versions of a project and show what changed

Try asking your AI

  • “Read my project file and tell me which group addresses are missing a status object”
  • “Check this project for naming and data type problems and give me a report”
  • “Generate Home Assistant configuration for the lights and climate in this project”
  • “Compare these two project files and list what changed between them”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat, like a list of problems found or a short summary of the project. It also writes files into a workspace folder, such as a Markdown report, an ETS XML or CSV file, Home Assistant YAML, and a handover pack. Anything unclear is put in a review list instead of being guessed, so you can decide. Nothing is changed in your original project file.

Before you start

What you need

  • A KNX project file exported from ETS5 or ETS6 (.knxproj)
  • Python 3.10 or newer
  • An AI app that can use MCP servers, like Claude Desktop

Good to know

It only reads your project file and writes new files into a workspace, but always review the suggested fixes and generated files yourself before using them in a real installation.

Install it with your AI
