FragDenStaat MCP server
by notDIRK
Ask your AI to find the right German authority, check the law and deadline, and prepare a freedom-of-information request.

This is a helper for FragDenStaat.de, the German site where you can ask public authorities for information. It lets your AI assistant look up which office has to answer you, which law applies, and how long they have to reply. It is handy if you send freedom-of-information requests, or want to, but find the paperwork and the legal wording hard to get right.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another service. This one connects your AI to FragDenStaat.de, the German freedom-of-information platform. Once it is set up, you can ask in plain words and the AI will look things up there or prepare things for you.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something like who is responsible for a request about a certain town. The AI uses this helper, which talks to the FragDenStaat website and its public data. The helper finds the authority, the law that applies and the deadline, and hands that back to the AI. The AI then explains it to you in the chat, and shows the web addresses it used so you can check the answer yourself. It can also look at requests you have already sent, collect the replies, and write a new request to a file on your computer.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Find the authority responsible for a place or topic
- Check which law applies and what deadline it sets
- Look at the requests you have already sent and their replies
- Download attachments that came with a reply
- Check which of your requests are close to their deadline
- Write a new request to a file on your computer for you to read first
- Prepare a prefilled web form so you can send the request yourself
Try asking your AI
- “Who has to answer a freedom-of-information request about the city of Bonn, and under which act?”
- “Which law applies to a request to a municipality in Rhineland-Palatinate, and how long do they have to reply?”
- “Show me my open requests and which ones are close to their deadline”
- “Write a draft request to my local building authority about the last three construction permits”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in plain words in the chat: the name of the authority, the law that applies, the deadline, and the web addresses the helper used so you can check them. For your own requests, you get lists of what you sent, the replies, and any attachments. When you ask for a draft, it writes a file on your computer that you can read and edit before anything is sent. It can also give you a prefilled web form link so you press send yourself.
Before you start
What you need
- Python 3.10 or newer on your computer
- Nothing else for the basic lookups, they need no account
- A free FragDenStaat.de account and a registered application if you want to see your own requests or submit
Good to know
Submitting a request through the API sends it immediately and cannot be undone, and it may file under the wrong law, so use the prefilled web form and press send yourself; also remember that requests are public by default, so do not put your address or personal details in them.
