OPA MCP server

by OrygnsCode

Lets your AI write, check, test and explain Open Policy Agent (OPA) rules for you.

This is a helper that connects your AI assistant to Open Policy Agent, usually called OPA. OPA is a tool companies use to write rules that decide who is allowed to do what, like who can access a server or deploy code. If you work with these rules, or your team does, this makes your AI able to help with them directly.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. It cannot open files on your computer or talk to other programs. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI one new skill. This helper gives your AI a connection to OPA, so it can read your rule files, check them, run them, and explain what they decide.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something about your OPA rules, in normal words. The AI passes that request to this helper. The helper then runs the real OPA and Regal programs on your machine, or talks to a running OPA server. It sends the result back to your AI, which explains it to you in the chat.

What you can do with it

  • Write and tidy up OPA rule files
  • Check your rules for mistakes and style problems
  • Run a rule against sample data to see what it decides
  • Explain why a request was allowed or denied
  • Create test files for your rules
  • Package your rules into a file you can deploy
  • List, add or remove rules on a running OPA server

Try asking your AI

  • “Check my policy folder for errors and tell me what to fix”
  • “Why did this request get denied by our rules?”
  • “Write a rule that only lets managers approve expenses over 500”
  • “Run my policy against this sample user and show the result”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in plain chat: lists of problems with their file and line, the result of running a rule, or a step by step explanation of a decision. It can also produce files, like a formatted rule file or a packaged bundle you can deploy. Everything comes back as text your AI reads and summarizes for you.

Before you start

What you need

  • The OPA program installed on your computer, or a running OPA server address
  • Node.js 22 or newer if you use the npm install
  • The Regal linter installed if you want style checks
  • A list of folders the helper is allowed to read, set in its settings

Good to know

It can change or delete rules on a running OPA server, so be careful when you ask it to update policies there.

Install it with your AI

Add OPA MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check OPA MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
