Interactive MCP server
by ttommyth
Lets your AI pause and ask you questions, show options, and ping you when it is done.

This is a small helper that lets your AI stop and talk to you while it works, instead of guessing and running ahead. It is handy if you use Claude Desktop, Cursor, or VS Code and want the AI to check in with you. It runs on your own computer, so it can pop up a question box or a notification on your screen.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you in the text box. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something, and here it connects your AI to your own computer screen. Once it is set up, the AI can ask you a question and wait for your answer, or send you a little pop-up when a job is finished. You do not have to do anything special, the AI just uses it when it needs to.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI to do something, like set up a project or review some code. When the AI needs a decision from you, it uses this helper to show you a question, sometimes with a few choices to click. You answer, and the AI keeps going with your answer in hand. It can also open a longer back-and-forth chat in a small command-line window, and send a notification when the whole task is done. Everything happens on your machine, right where you are working.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Answer a question your AI asks you mid-task
- Pick from a few options the AI shows you
- Get a pop-up notification when a long job finishes
- Start a longer chat session with the AI in a small window
- Keep asking follow-up questions inside that chat session
- Close the chat session when you are done
Try asking your AI
- “Set up a new project for me and ask me which framework I want before you start”
- “Review this file and check with me before you change anything”
- “Notify me when the long build is finished”
- “Start a chat session so we can go through this plan step by step”
What it gives back to you
You get a question box or a notification on your screen, and your answer goes straight back to the AI. In the chat, you will see the AI pause, wait, and then continue with what you told it. If you started a longer chat session, your back-and-forth happens in a small command-line window. The AI can also tell you when it is finished.
Before you start
What you need
- The npx command available on your computer (it comes with Node.js)
- An MCP client such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, or VS Code
- A small edit to that client's settings file to add this server
Good to know
It runs on your own computer and can pop up windows and notifications, so only use it with an AI client you trust. The project is still in its early stages.
Install it with your AI
Add Interactive MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Interactive MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
People who use an AI assistant for coding, setup, or planning and want it to check in with them instead of guessing.
