Patent Search MCP server

by tushariitr-19

Let your AI search patents and find prior art using the free Google Patents public dataset.

This is a small helper that lets your AI look up patents for you. It searches the huge public Google Patents dataset and can pull up details like patent numbers, technology codes, citations, and the claims text. It is handy for researchers, inventors, and anyone doing a quick prior art check before filing or writing.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an outside service. This one connects your AI to the Google Patents public dataset, so when you ask a patent question, the AI can go look it up and bring real results back to you.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like "find patents about transformer neural networks." The AI passes your question to this helper. The helper runs a search against the Google Patents public dataset on BigQuery, which is Google's tool for querying very large tables of data. The results come back to your AI, and your AI shows them to you in the chat as a list of patents with key details.

What you can do with it

  • Search patents by keyword or technology topic
  • Search patents by inventor name
  • Look up a specific patent by its publication number
  • Read the full details of a patent, including CPC codes and citations
  • Fetch the claims text of a patent
  • Check for prior art before filing or writing

Try asking your AI

  • “Search for patents related to transformer neural networks”
  • “Find prior art for context-aware UI element hiding”
  • “What patents has Google filed related to quantum computing?”
  • “Find patents by inventor Yann LeCun”

What it gives back to you

You get back a list of matching patents with details like the patent number, title, inventor, and technology codes. If you ask for a specific patent, it returns the full details, including citations and the claims text. Everything shows up right in your chat as readable text, so you can copy it into your notes or a document.

Before you start

What you need

  • A Google Cloud account (free to create)
  • A Google Cloud project with the BigQuery API turned on
  • A service account key file (a small JSON file Google gives you; think of it as a password for apps)
  • The Claude desktop app or another app that supports MCP servers

Good to know

It only reads public patent data, so it does not change or delete anything, but you do need to set up a Google Cloud account and key file before it works.

Install it with your AI

Add Patent Search MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
