2U and IBM Launch Six New Microcredentials for AI and Data Skills
2U, a leader in education technology, has expanded its partnership with IBM to offer six new technical microcredentials on edX, 2U’s global online learning platform. These programs target working professionals eager to build practical skills in data science, artificial intelligence (AI), and software engineering through a blend of live instruction, self-paced learning, and peer collaboration.
With AI reshaping job roles at an unprecedented rate—PwC reports skills in AI-related roles evolving 66% faster than average—there’s a clear need for flexible yet structured learning options. These microcredentials offer shorter, more affordable alternatives to traditional degrees while providing more support than typical self-paced courses. The goal is to help learners quickly gain relevant skills that meet current industry demands.
Programs Now Open for Enrollment
The first three courses available for enrollment with cohorts starting October 2025 are:
- IBM Data Analyst Certificate (10 weeks): Builds foundational analytical skills for professionals looking to advance or transition into data-focused roles.
- IBM Data Science Certificate (10 weeks): Covers the full data science workflow, including data collection, statistical analysis, machine learning with Python, and ethics, featuring hands-on projects.
- IBM Applied AI Developer Certificate (6 weeks): Focuses on designing and deploying AI solutions with an emphasis on practical application and responsible innovation, including trends in generative AI.
Three additional programs—Software Engineer, Generative AI Engineer, and DevOps Engineer—will open for enrollment soon. All courses are based on IBM-developed curriculum, led by subject experts, and include peer learning and hands-on capstone projects.
Course Structure and Support
Each program requires about 12 hours of work per week, priced between $1,900 and $2,500. Students receive ongoing support from instructors and success advisors and earn an official IBM certificate upon completion.
According to Andy Morgan, Chief Partnerships Officer at 2U, “Education must keep pace with industry changes. Our expanded partnership with IBM helps professionals gain in-demand skills and enables employers to find the talent they need.”
IBM has a long history of innovation on edX, being the first corporate partner to offer MicroBachelors® programs. Rav Ahuja from IBM Skills Network highlights that their collaboration with 2U reflects a commitment to making job-relevant skills more accessible as the workplace evolves.
Impact on Workforce Education
This initiative supports 2U's mission to build partnerships that deliver workforce-relevant education and helps IBM further its goal of closing the global skills gap in an AI-driven economy. Together, they provide targeted education that prepares professionals to grow confidently in technical roles.
