AI-Driven Crime Monitoring Tools Developed by IISER Thiruvananthapuram

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Thiruvananthapuram (IISER Thiruvananthapuram) are collaborating with the Kerala Police to develop Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based tools for crime monitoring and analysis. This initiative was highlighted during the institute's 13th convocation. The project involves the newly established School of Data Science at IISER and the intelligence wing of the Kerala Police.

Establishing New Schools to Address Emerging Challenges

In response to the increasing importance of AI and climate issues, IISER Thiruvananthapuram has launched two new schools: the School of Data Science and the School of Earth, Environmental, and Sustainability Sciences. These schools focus on developing expertise that meets current and future demands.

Additionally, the institute has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Kerala’s Additional Skill Acquisition Programme (ASAP) to train skilled professionals in data science. Partnerships with the Technopark Technology Business Incubator and the Kerala Startup Mission aim to boost innovation, entrepreneurship, and the startup ecosystem in the region.

Funding and Industry Collaboration

The School of Data Science has secured funding from the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India, to develop AI solutions for secure communication over 6G-assisted edge networks. Since its establishment in 2008, IISER Thiruvananthapuram has emphasized strengthening ties between academia and industry to foster practical applications of research.

  • Collaboration between academic researchers and law enforcement enhances crime prevention and analysis capabilities.
  • New educational programs aim to equip professionals with data science skills relevant to public safety and technology sectors.
  • Government funding supports cutting-edge projects in AI communication technologies, preparing for next-generation networks.

For professionals in human resources, science, and research, this development illustrates how academic institutions are aligning education and innovation with public sector needs. Upskilling in data science and AI can open pathways in emerging fields tied to security and sustainable development.
