CBSE Schools See Massive Growth in AI Subject Offerings for Classes 9 and 11
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has witnessed a remarkable increase in the number of schools offering artificial intelligence (AI) as an elective subject. From just 235 schools in 2019–20, over 4,500 now provide AI in Class 9. Similarly, Class 11 saw growth from 80 schools in 2020–21 to 944 schools in 2024–25, according to data recently shared by the union ministry of education.
AI was introduced as an optional skill subject in Class 9 starting in the 2019–20 academic year and extended to Class 11 from 2020–21. The ministry’s data reveals a surge in student enrolment as well. Class 9 saw a 2,900% increase in students opting for AI—from 15,645 in 2019–20 to 469,454 in 2024–25. Class 11 enrolment rose by 1,556%, from 2,048 students to 33,933 over the same period.
Collaborations to Build AI Curriculum
The CBSE developed its AI curriculum with support from industry leaders Intel and IBM, along with other educational institutions. Memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were signed to promote technology-based learning, ensuring the course content stays relevant and practical.
Educators Highlight the Importance of AI Education
School principals and technology experts emphasize that AI education is becoming essential due to its growing role in education and beyond. Swati Yadav, principal of Bliss International Public School in Meerut, shared that teachers are trained in smart tutoring platforms. This allows them to create customized study plans, using AI to monitor student progress and support those who need extra help.
Alka Kapur, principal of Modern Public School in Delhi, noted a shift in students’ interests. Rather than focusing on gadgets, students are curious about how technology functions, how it impacts daily life, and how it can be used responsibly for positive change.

Sameer Arora, principal of Shiv Nadar School in Gurugram, stresses the importance of teaching students not just how AI works, but what it means. Growing Interest Among Students and Parents
Akshal Agrawal, co-founder of the curriculum design organization Nature Nurture, points out that the rise in AI electives is driven by genuine curiosity. Students want to understand the technology behind their everyday tools. Parents and educators increasingly recognize the need for skills beyond traditional academics.
Anurag Gupta, CEO of STEMROBO Technologies, adds that the increased demand for AI courses reflects a shift in mindset. Parents and schools are focused on preparing students not just to use technology, but to innovate with it.
