AI Features Drive Modest Smartphone Market Growth as Samsung and Apple Lead Amid Economic Pressures

Global Smartphone Sales Grow 1.5% Year-Over-Year Despite Q2 Dip

Global smartphone sales reached 295.2 million units in the second quarter of 2025, showing a 1.5% increase compared to the same period last year. This growth comes despite a 3.18% drop from the first quarter of 2025, demonstrating the market’s resilience amid ongoing economic challenges like inflation, currency fluctuations, and shifting consumer priorities.

Economic uncertainty has hit lower-end smartphone segments hardest. According to International Data Corporation (IDC), weak demand in major markets such as China has contributed to the quarterly decline. Spending on budget smartphones, especially low-end Android devices, has been squeezed as consumers become more price sensitive.

Market Leaders: Samsung and Apple Drive AI-Powered Growth

Samsung remains the top smartphone vendor with 58 million units shipped in Q2 2025, capturing 19.7% of the global market. Their success is largely due to AI enhancements in mid-range models like the Galaxy A36 and A56, combined with aggressive retail campaigns that helped offset broader market struggles.

Apple shipped 46.4 million units, holding a 15.7% share. While sales in China slightly declined, Apple's growth in emerging markets helped push its global sales up by 1.5%. The company continues to balance premium product appeal with expanding reach.

Shifts in Market Dynamics Among Chinese Brands

Chinese brands Xiaomi, vivo, and Transsion hold the third, fourth, and fifth spots with shipments of 42.5 million, 27.1 million, and 25.1 million units respectively. Notably, Transsion entered the top five, replacing OPPO which faced disruptions due to tariffs.

Together, the top five manufacturers account for 67.4% of worldwide shipments, showing strong market concentration. The remaining 32.6% is split among numerous smaller brands, highlighting the fragmented nature of the industry outside the leading players.

Q2 Slowdown Linked to Inventory and Consumer Confidence

Year-over-year growth slowed from 1.5% in Q1 to 1% in Q2. Analysts attribute this to inventory management during the 618 e-commerce festival, where brands focused on clearing stock rather than pushing new shipments. Lower consumer confidence added to the sales challenges despite technological improvements.

Despite these hurdles, the integration of AI features into mid-range phones offers a promising path forward. This trend, combined with steady sales growth over eight consecutive quarters—the longest stretch since 2013—suggests the market may be stabilizing.

Looking Ahead: Balancing Innovation with Affordability

The smartphone industry faces ongoing headwinds from inflation, tariffs, and supply chain issues. Success will depend on offering AI-driven innovations in affordable devices to meet the needs of price-conscious consumers.

Sales professionals should focus on highlighting AI features in mid-range models to meet evolving customer expectations. For those interested in learning more about AI applications that can boost sales strategies and product knowledge, exploring AI training courses may provide valuable insights.
