AI Meets Tradition: Tsinghua and HSE Students Connect Through Technology and Chinese Culture Day

AI and Chinese Culture Day: HSE University Hosts Tsinghua University Researchers

This summer, a group of young researchers from Tsinghua University’s Department of Automation, led by Associate Professor Shang Chao, visited Moscow and St Petersburg as part of the Mobius project. Their itinerary included stops at several leading Russian institutions and companies such as HSE University, Bauman Moscow State Technical University, ITMO University, Sber, Kaspersky Lab, and Huawei's Russian branch.

The visit to HSE University was arranged by the Centre for International Student Mobility and Educational Projects within the university’s Department of Internationalisation. Fourteen students from Tsinghua’s Department of Automation, Academy of Arts and Design, and School of Economics and Management attended a lecture by Daria Kasyanenko, Senior Lecturer at the Big Data and Information Retrieval School. The lecture highlighted the use of AI tools in teaching both at the Faculty of Computer Science and the HSE AI Research Centre.

Insights from Tsinghua Students

Peng Ziyi, Team Lead, Department of Automation, Tsinghua University

“The presentation on computer science and the AI application lecture gave us a clear view of how technology influences education. The campus tour showed us the vibrant academic environment at HSE, impressing us with the innovative teaching methods and dedication of staff and students. The Chinese Culture Day on July 24th was particularly rewarding, as HSE students showed genuine enthusiasm for engaging with Chinese traditions. We appreciate the warm hospitality and hope to continue our studies here in the future.”

Liu Shuran, Postgraduate Student, Tsinghua University

“Among the many highlights of our trip, the opportunity to learn directly from experts at universities and companies stood out. The lecture by Daria Kasyanenko impressed me, especially the emphasis on digital literacy across all disciplines at HSE. Students learn to use AI, coding, and data analysis effectively—practices that Chinese universities could benefit from adopting.”

Tela Meng, Department of Automation, Tsinghua University

“Moscow blends history and modernity in a fascinating way, and the metro stations are like art galleries. Beyond HSE’s Chinese Culture Day, we organised an outdoor event on Arbat Street where locals eagerly participated in fan painting and making aromatic sachets. The confident Chinese language skills of HSE students were a pleasant surprise.”

Jing Haoda, Department of Automation, Tsinghua University

“Having studied Russian for a semester, this trip gave me a chance to practice. I helped translate signs for our cultural event and hope to improve my Russian further to communicate freely during future visits. I found Kaspersky Lab’s corporate culture interesting, especially compared to the intense work schedules common in large Chinese tech firms.”

Perspectives from HSE University

Sofia Tarasova, Third-Year Student, Double Degree Programme ‘Economics and Politics in Asia’

“The Chinese Culture Day organised by Tsinghua students was a wonderful chance to practise Chinese in a relaxed setting and make new friends. The fan painting activity was my favorite—I now have a keepsake from that day. I look forward to more events like this at HSE.”

Weidali Senotrusov, Head of HSE Chinese Club

“Welcoming Tsinghua students to HSE was a rewarding experience. It was inspiring to see top students from both universities share their academic journeys and cultural impressions. The Tsinghua group particularly enjoyed Moscow’s VDNH and the Museum of Cosmonautics. Their admiration for HSE students’ high-level Chinese language skills reflects the quality of our language education.”

Bridging Cultures and Advancing AI Education

This exchange highlights practical collaboration between leading institutions in Russia and China, with a focus on AI education and cultural engagement. The Tsinghua team’s visit offered valuable insights into AI applications in education, digital literacy, and work culture differences. Meanwhile, cultural activities fostered meaningful connections and language practice.

For researchers and educators interested in AI’s role in education and cross-cultural academic collaboration, this visit exemplifies how sharing knowledge and traditions can enrich learning environments.
