Northern Ireland Launches National Study on AI's Role in Student Literacy
Northern Ireland’s Department of Education has initiated a national research study to assess how artificial intelligence (AI) can support student literacy. Led by Oxford Brookes University, the project will evaluate evidence-based AI reading interventions to inform literacy policy and improve learning outcomes, especially for disadvantaged students and those with Special Educational Needs (SEND).
Study Design and Implementation
The study employs a matched-pair design to generate rigorous, policy-relevant evidence. Over 15,000 students will complete a 15-minute baseline literacy assessment using Amira Learning, an AI-powered tool that listens to students read aloud and identifies specific reading challenges.
Over 12 months, students will engage with Amira’s AI-assisted reading tutor for 20-40 minutes weekly. Meanwhile, teachers will receive both face-to-face and online training from Oxford Brookes University. This training will help educators interpret the AI assessment data and implement targeted, evidence-based interventions tailored to individual student needs.
Supporting Teachers with AI
Professor Tim Vorley, Pro Vice-Chancellor at Oxford Brookes University, highlights that the study focuses on complementing existing teaching methods. He explains, “It's about applying the evidence, not replacing it—with technology that complements and boosts the professionalism of the teachers, rather than competing with it.”
This approach ensures that AI tools support rather than supplant teacher expertise, helping educators identify struggling readers more effectively and tailor interventions where they are most needed.
Policy Implications and Future Outlook
Paul Givan MLA, Northern Ireland’s Minister of Education, emphasizes literacy’s foundational role in learning. He states, “Literacy is core to allowing pupils to access knowledge and all areas of learning within the curriculum. It is the key to unlocking the curriculum and a love for learning.”
The outcomes of the study are expected to directly influence Northern Ireland’s literacy policy, providing a data-driven basis for future initiatives and resource allocation.
Industry Perspective
Mark Angel, CEO of Amira, notes the significance of combining AI with established reading science. He says, “This study is an important opportunity to show how AI and the Science of Reading can come together to deliver real, measurable impact in the classroom. At Amira, we're proud to support educators with reading solutions that are not only research-backed, but proven in practice.”
