AI reduces legal costs and could increase the number of lawsuits

Artificial intelligence is widely expected to automate routine legal tasks, but legal experts say the technology's most significant impact may be a surge in litigation rather than job losses for lawyers.

The cost barrier to legal action

Property disputes, rental disagreements, cheque bounce cases, and small business contract disputes are common across India. Yet many people never take these issues to court. The main reason is not the lack of evidence, but the high cost of pursuing legal action. Lawyer fees, document preparation, and lengthy court procedures discourage many people from filing cases.

If AI makes legal drafting, document review, and legal research faster and more affordable, legal services could become accessible to a much larger section of society. As a result, people who previously stayed away from the legal system may be more willing to approach the courts. The biggest barrier to justice has always been cost, and AI has the potential to lower it significantly.

Technology expands demand, not destroys it

History shows that new technology does not always eliminate jobs. When Google Maps became widely available, drivers did not disappear. Instead, ride-hailing services, deliveries, and travel became more common. Similarly, online tax filing did not replace chartered accountants. Many professionals shifted toward higher-value services such as tax planning and business advisory.

The legal profession could experience a similar transition. AI can analyze documents, search previous judgments, and prepare legal drafts much faster than humans. However, it cannot argue a case in court or take legal responsibility for its advice. Lawyers who develop skills in AI for Legal applications may find themselves spending less time on routine paperwork and more time on legal strategy, negotiation, and client advice.

New challenges for courts

The increased use of AI could also create new challenges. Along with genuine legal claims, the technology may also make it easier to generate misleading legal notices or file weak and unnecessary cases. This could place additional pressure on courts that are already dealing with heavy workloads.

Why this matters for legal professionals

For lawyers, the shift means preparing for an environment where low-cost, high-volume legal services may become the norm. The focus will need to move from drafting and document review to strategic advice, dispute resolution, and risk management. Firms that adopt AI tools early may gain a competitive edge, but they will also face the challenge of filtering out AI-generated frivolous claims. The real question is not whether AI will replace lawyers, but whether it will encourage millions of people to finally seek legal action - and how the profession adapts to that new reality.
