AI Integration in Australian Sport: CSIRO and ASC Collaboration
Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, has partnered with the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) in a three-year research initiative to advance the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in Australian sport. This collaboration represents a first-of-its-kind effort to coordinate AI development across multiple sports disciplines while focusing on ethical standards and inclusivity.
Focusing on Key Research Areas
The partnership will initially concentrate on two main areas:
- Developing an AI roadmap specifically for Australian sports
- Establishing responsible AI guidelines tailored to sports applications
The increasing but fragmented adoption of AI technologies across sports highlights the need for a unified approach. Collaboration aims to ensure transparency, fairness, and ethical use of AI, benefiting athletes and sporting communities alike.
AI Roadmap and Responsible AI Practices
The AI roadmap will offer a detailed overview of current AI applications in sport, identify opportunities that cut across different sports, and help set clear research priorities. Alongside this, a responsible AI position statement and checklist will guide community stakeholders in adopting AI technologies responsibly and ethically.
Building Capability and Performance
Professor Jon Whittle, Director of CSIRO’s Data61, emphasized the initiative’s goal to enhance Australian sport from grassroots participation to elite performance. “We aim to deliver positive outcomes across all sport levels and increase engagement among Australians,” he said.
The roadmap and responsible AI framework are expected to strengthen both the performance and integrity of sports, positioning Australia as a leader in sports science and AI application.
Driving Innovation in the Sport System
ASC CEO Kieren Perkins OAM highlighted the partnership’s role in fostering innovation. By working with CSIRO, the ASC will enhance its ability to utilize data and emerging digital technologies within ethical boundaries.
This collaboration also provides a platform for both organizations to explore how AI can generate tangible benefits for Australian sport while maintaining responsible governance.
Identifying Cross-Sport Opportunities
The partnership will seek research opportunities that align with CSIRO’s expertise and offer value across multiple sports. These efforts are expected to create synergies and drive broader advancements in AI applications within the sporting sector.
