AICTE to Embed AI Across All Technical Courses in India
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is moving to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into every branch of technical education. TG Sitharam, AICTE Chairperson, shared this update during a parliamentary advisory committee meeting held in Indore, chaired by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
An expert panel has been set up by AICTE to revise the model curriculums for engineering, IT, and management studies. The goal is to embed AI components throughout these programs, ensuring students gain relevant skills across disciplines.
Timeline for Curriculum Updates
The panel has already held three meetings and is expected to submit recommendations within a month. After review, the updated curriculums could be finalized in the following two months. This schedule means AI-based education could be integrated into technical courses as early as the next academic year.
While AICTE introduced a BTech course in AI and Data Science back in 2017, this initiative marks the first time AI will be a core part of all technical education, rather than a standalone specialty.
Promoting Education in Indian Languages
Alongside AI integration, AICTE is also focusing on expanding education in Indian languages. Over the last two years, the council has made 1,000 textbooks available online in 12 Indian languages, which have been downloaded over seven lakh times.
Currently, 54 technical institutions offer courses in various regional languages. The Indore meeting emphasized encouraging education in Indian languages at both school and higher education levels, in line with the National Education Policy.
What This Means for Educators
- Technical educators will soon need to incorporate AI concepts into a wide range of courses, beyond dedicated AI programs.
- Curriculum developers should prepare for significant updates reflecting AI knowledge and skills.
- There is an increasing push to offer technical education in regional languages, which can improve accessibility and comprehension.
For education professionals looking to keep pace with these changes, exploring updated AI learning resources will be key. Platforms like Complete AI Training offer a variety of courses that align well with the skills now being integrated into curricula nationwide.
