AI to contribute $12 billion to Indian healthcare by 2030, create 6 million jobs

Artificial intelligence will likely generate $12 billion in value for India's healthcare sector and create six million jobs by 2030, according to Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India.

Sood made the projection while speaking at the CIO Conclave & CIO Excellence Awards in New Delhi on May 3. He identified AI as a "horizontal enabler" across sectors, with particular impact expected in banking and healthcare.

The jobs figure assumes AI deployment across healthcare and financial services. Sood called for systems-level thinking and building domestic AI capabilities, positioning chief information officers as bridges between research institutions, policy makers, and enterprise operations.

Healthcare integration already underway

India has already embedded AI into public health delivery across multiple programs since 2022. The National TB Elimination Programme, National Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Programme, and Media Disease Surveillance System now use AI-enabled tools to let non-specialists perform advanced screenings.

Results show a 27 percent decline in adverse TB outcomes. The disease surveillance system generated over 4,500 outbreak alerts.

The e-Sanjeevani telemedicine platform, which uses AI-assisted diagnosis suggestions, has supported 282 million consultations. A separate system called UdyogYantra monitors malnutrition using AI.

These programs address specialist shortages by scaling diagnosis and screening beyond traditional clinical settings.

Security and CIO responsibilities

Narendra Nath G, Joint Secretary of the National Security Council Secretariat, said CIOs must integrate AI tools into business workflows while preparing for the shift to post-quantum cryptography. The government is developing a national testing and certification framework for cryptographic readiness.

Organizations need to inventory their technology assets and plan upgrades before quantum computing threatens current encryption methods.
