Air Combat Command Stands Up AI Division to Centralize Military Operations

Air Combat Command activated a new AI Integration Division on April 1, making it the central authority for artificial intelligence policy, tool validation, and training across the command. The division, designated A3AI and based at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, reports to ACC's Operations Directorate.

The move reflects pressure from national priorities, including America's AI Action Plan, and ACC's stated goal to operationalize emerging technologies faster than competitors.

What A3AI Does

The division establishes AI policy, validates tools before operational use, delivers training to ACC wings, and coordinates with Department of the Air Force and Department of War AI initiatives. It operates under a centralized governance model with distributed execution-A3AI sets enterprise standards while individual wings adapt approved applications to their missions.

Lt. Col. Toni Gray, ACC/A3 director of AI strategy and implementation, said the formal codification of the AI organization into a new A-staff division consolidates redundant efforts and accelerates deployment of validated capabilities.

Early Results

Working with the 20th Fighter Wing at Shaw Air Force Base, A3AI hosted an acceleration event that produced a data analysis tool for weather operations. The tool compressed more than 85 work hours of data gathering into minutes, increasing accuracy and timeliness of operational weather analysis.

Airmen across the command are now developing and refining machine learning tools and operational tactics.

Operational Impact

Ted Uchida, ACC deputy director of operations, said the division transforms machine learning into concrete operational results. "Our goal is to create a more AI-empowered force, and provide the tools and resources required for our most innovative Airmen to revolutionize the way we operate at all levels of the command," he said.

The infrastructure is designed to work across all classification levels and adapt to different operational environments.
