Air Combat Command establishes dedicated AI division for operations

Air Combat Command's Operations Directorate activated a new Artificial Intelligence Integration Division on April 1 at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia. The division, designated A3AI, will set AI policy, validate tools for operational use, train ACC wings, and coordinate with broader Department of the Air Force and Department of Defense AI efforts.

The move reflects Gen. Adrian Spain's commitment to accelerating AI adoption across the command. "When A3 formally codified the AI organization into a new A-staff division, that was a significant milestone," said Lt. Col. Toni Gray, ACC/A3 director of AI strategy and implementation.

Weather tool demonstrates operational value

The division has already produced measurable results. Working with the 20th Fighter Wing at Shaw Air Force Base, the A3AI team developed an AI-driven weather data analysis tool for operations personnel across ACC. The tool compressed more than 85 work hours of manual data gathering into minutes while improving accuracy and timeliness.

The weather tool emerged from an AI acceleration event where Airmen identified operational bottlenecks and built solutions to address them. That project signals the start of broader machine learning development across the command.

Structure allows central standards with local flexibility

A3AI operates under a centralized governance model with distributed execution. The division sets enterprise-wide standards while allowing individual wings to adapt approved AI applications to their specific missions.

"Our goal is to create a more AI-empowered force and provide the tools and resources required for our most innovative Airmen to revolutionize the way we operate at all levels," said Ted Uchida, ACC deputy director of operations.

The division's work supports national priorities outlined in America's AI Action Plan. For operations professionals, this means access to validated AI capabilities designed for tactical and strategic decision-making across all classification levels.
