DMM Workshop Advances AI Strategy for Digital Warfighting
The Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC), in collaboration with industry partners, recently held the Digital Materiel Management (DMM) Industry Association Consortium Workshop as part of the Dayton Digital Transformation Summit. The event, conducted May 6-8, focused on turning artificial intelligence ambitions into practical, mission-ready capabilities across the Air Force enterprise.
Artificial intelligence is shaping the future of warfare. Fabio Agosto, AFMC DMM team enterprise architect, emphasized that AI will define not just how the Air Force fights, but also how it supports and sustains its operations. The workshop was built around delivering trusted AI solutions that meet operational demands on time and within budget.
Focusing on Practical AI Outcomes
Participants were challenged to start with mission objectives and work backward to identify capability gaps and risks. The goal was to pinpoint near-term actions that could make AI-driven improvements a reality within the next three years. Areas covered included sustainment, logistics, procurement, and analysis—each critical to enhancing decision-making and mission execution.
“Artificial intelligence is no longer a future concept, it’s a present necessity,” Agosto said. “If we don’t move fast, we fall behind.” This sense of urgency reflects the evolving battlefield where AI reshapes the decision space much like airpower did in the past.
Strengthening Collaboration Between DoD and Industry
The workshop also served as a platform to deepen partnerships between the Air Force and its industry collaborators. Speed and effectiveness in adopting AI depend heavily on this cooperation. Agosto highlighted that the strategic advantage for the Department of Defense lies in how quickly and successfully it teams with industry to integrate AI into operations.
The event reinforced a key message of the Dayton Digital Transformation Summit: digital transformation requires decisive action today, not tomorrow. For the Air Force, leveraging AI effectively is essential to maintaining an edge over potential adversaries.
“This isn’t about technology for technology’s sake,” Agosto stated. “It’s about delivering the right tools to our Airmen—on time, on cost, and on target. The future of the Air Force will be shaped by our Airmen and industry partners, not by code or AI alone.”
