Amazon to Employees: Move to Major Hubs or Resign as AI Restructures Workforce

Amazon's Relocation Directive: What HR Professionals Need to Know

Amazon is asking thousands of US-based employees to relocate to central hubs or resign. This move supports the company’s increasing investment in artificial intelligence (AI). Teams are consolidating in Seattle, Washington; Arlington, Virginia; and Washington, DC, aiming to improve collaboration and effectiveness.

With over 1.56 million employees worldwide, including 350,000 corporate staff, Amazon’s HR teams can expect a surge in inquiries and relocation requests. According to an Amazon spokesperson, this initiative has been in progress for more than a year, focusing on bringing teammates closer to improve productivity.

Relocation or Resignation: The Terms

Employees are receiving individual communications rather than mass emails. Some have been given 30 days to decide whether to relocate or resign, followed by 60 days to start the move or leave without severance.

In some cases, the relocation requires moving across the country. This approach is coupled with Amazon's recent policy requiring office presence five days a week, which has already caused some employees to seek more flexible roles elsewhere.

Since 2022, Amazon has laid off over 27,000 employees as part of cost reductions, making this relocation directive part of broader workforce changes.

AI’s Role in Workforce Changes

Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy recently noted that AI will lead to a smaller workforce in the coming years as automation takes over certain tasks. The company is already using AI in warehouses to speed up deliveries and has enhanced its customer service chatbot with AI capabilities.

In its February earnings call, Amazon revealed plans to invest about $105 billion in capital expenditures this year, primarily focused on AI. This signals the company’s commitment to integrating AI across operations, which raises concerns among employees about future job security.

For HR professionals, understanding these changes is critical. Supporting employees through relocation decisions and addressing AI-related anxieties will be key challenges in the months ahead.
