Army HR's Next Move: AI Inside IPPS-A to Cut Admin Load
The Army is consolidating dozens of legacy HR systems into the Integrated Personnel and Pay System-Army (IPPS-A) and testing how AI can reduce paperwork and friction for soldiers. A "disruptive technology pilot" called the HR Intelligent Engagement Platform is on deck to explore what prompt-driven HR can do in practice.

The team plans to award a contract for the pilot this year. Duration is flexible-three to eight months-driven by prototyping and real-world results. The selection is running through an open solicitation with a competitive down-select.
IPPS-A Progress So Far
IPPS-A, a nearly $600 million effort, went live across the Army in January 2023 after delays. Officials acknowledge early user pain points but say updates ship frequently as they absorb processes from legacy systems.

Next Up: Mobile In/Out-Processing
Within eight months, officials aim to roll out a mobile workflow for checking into new units and detaching from old ones. Soldiers could scan a QR code on arrival, triggering the Military Personnel Division to start in-processing.
IPPS-A would then deliver step-by-step "activity guides," turning multiple physical stops into a virtual flow. Faster onboarding means faster readiness.

Working groups of officers, enlisted, and warrant officers are shaping improvements to the talent profile feature. The goal: a single, richer view of skills and experiences that also helps with future civilian job hunts.
