ASEAN Media Capacity Building Workshop Held in Hong Kong
From July 14 to 18, 2025, over 20 senior media professionals from ASEAN countries gathered in Hong Kong for a focused workshop addressing the evolving role of artificial intelligence in media. The event explored practical strategies to manage AI's influence on journalism and media development.
Balancing AI Efficiency and Journalistic Integrity
Tutors from China Daily emphasized that while AI can greatly improve reporting efficiency—such as by catching spelling and grammar mistakes—it should not replace the critical judgment of journalists. Overreliance on AI risks producing factual errors, which can damage credibility. Reporters need to use AI as a supportive tool rather than a controlling force.
Doan Minh Anh, a reporter with VietnamPlus, highlighted the importance of maintaining confidence in human storytelling. She advised journalists to use AI tools to enhance their work but not to let those tools dictate the narrative or reporting process.
Creating Content That Resonates
Zhong Zhen, managing director at Xiaohongshu’s Greater Bay Area E-commerce Operating Center, pointed out that understanding audience preferences is key. Content must connect emotionally to engage users effectively. This human touch is a major factor behind Xiaohongshu's success and offers a valuable lesson for media companies aiming to retain relevance.
Future of Traditional Media in a Digital Era
Discussions also focused on the evolving role of traditional media, especially with the rise of key opinion leaders. Justin Clarence Lao Tembresa, CEO of Lannang Studios in the Philippines, stressed the need for traditional outlets to improve content quality and integrate new technologies without losing authenticity and warmth.
Hands-On Training: Photography and Mobile Journalism
The workshop included practical sessions on photography equipment, mobile shooting, and script design. China Daily tutors demonstrated various tools such as pocket cameras, drones, and action cameras, explaining framing and composition techniques. Participants showed strong interest in mobile photography accessories, continuing conversations well beyond the sessions.
Site Visits Enhance Contextual Learning
Attendees toured key locations in Hong Kong, including Cyberport and the Legislative Council, gaining insights into the city’s technology landscape and governance. They also visited Shenzhen’s Nanshan Energy Ecological Park, a model for green economic development. Soo Wern Jun from Malaysia's Malay Mail noted the park’s exemplary energy conservation efforts and expressed interest in applying those lessons back home.
Organizers and Collaboration
The workshop was jointly organized by the Chinese Mission to ASEAN and China Daily, reflecting a collaborative effort to support media professionals in adapting to new technologies and challenges.
