Baltimore Official Targets AI-Generated Meme in Election Year

Baltimore County Councilman Julian Jones is running for county executive when an offensive AI-generated image depicting him in Nazi imagery began circulating on social media. The meme shows Jones wearing a Keffiyeh and a Hitler-style mustache while saluting, seemingly designed to portray him as anti-Jewish.

Jones learned about the image only after multiple people sent it to him. "To be quite frank, I was totally shocked and deeply disturbed by the image," he said.

The councilman framed the attack as a deliberate strategy. "Someone is using this image to exploit legitimate fears of the Jewish community," Jones said. "They're using it to weaponize against my campaign."

A pattern emerges in Baltimore politics

The Jones incident follows a similar episode involving Baltimore City Mayor Brandon Scott. The city's inspector general, Isabel Cumming, posted an AI-generated photograph of the mayor on Facebook. Cumming and Scott are currently in a court dispute over access to city records.

The mayor's chief of staff wrote to the city ethics board raising concerns about the post. Cumming apologized for it the following day.

Jewish leaders weigh in

Howard Libit, executive director of the Baltimore Jewish Council, called the Jones meme "despicable, whether it's about Councilman Jones or anyone else in the race."

Libit expressed confidence in voters' judgment. "I'd like to think that the voters of Baltimore County, Jewish or not, are more sophisticated than that and can't be swayed by what's obviously fake," he said.

Jones calls for broader condemnation

The councilman is pushing politicians across party lines to denounce AI-generated political attacks. He views the dual incidents as evidence of a broader problem that requires coordinated response from elected officials.

For government professionals, these incidents highlight the need for clear policies on AI-generated content in political campaigns and official communications. Learn more about AI for Government and how institutions are addressing these challenges.
