Campus Libraries Become AI Training Centers for Students and Faculty

College libraries are shifting from quiet study spaces to hands-on AI education hubs where students, faculty and researchers learn to use artificial intelligence tools. Bryn Mawr College and the University of Oklahoma now operate AI "sandboxes"-shared virtual spaces where users experiment with different AI tools while receiving ongoing support.

The University of Virginia took the approach further this year by launching its AI Literacy and Action Lab in partnership with the university's library. Leo S. Lo, UVA's university librarian and dean of libraries, designed the lab's framework to combine technical knowledge with ethical awareness, critical thinking, practical application and understanding of societal impact.

For educators, this shift matters. Libraries traditionally served as repositories of information. Now they're becoming places where your students and colleagues can test AI tools in controlled environments, ask questions and learn how these systems fit into actual work.

The library-based model addresses a gap many institutions face: how to teach AI literacy broadly across campus rather than confining it to computer science departments. By locating these resources in the library-a space most students already visit-colleges remove barriers to access.
