Cava Builds Real-Time AI Systems to Boost Sales Without Heavy Discounts
Cava is moving beyond traditional restaurant operations by deploying AI systems designed to forecast demand, personalize marketing, and schedule staff in real time. The Mediterranean chain reported 9.7% same-restaurant sales growth and 6.8% traffic growth in Q1, outpacing competitors while avoiding aggressive discounting.
Chief executive Brett Schulman said on the company's earnings call Tuesday that Cava is laying groundwork to become a real-time AI-enabled business. The company introduced two systems this year: Cava Core, a centralized data platform, and Cava Current, a real-time operating platform that processes orders across restaurants.
How the Systems Work
Cava Core and Cava Current handle AI-based demand forecasting, predictive labor scheduling, inventory management, and personalized digital marketing. The systems are designed to help stores anticipate customer needs and align food preparation and staffing accordingly.
Schulman said the technology is intended to enhance human work, not replace it. The company plans to integrate data, applications, and intelligence across its operations over the coming years.
Performance and Customer Base
Cava's lower-income customer groups are outperforming other income brackets even as broader restaurant traffic softens. The company positions its menu as a value option with premium ingredients rather than relying on price cuts.
This approach sets Cava apart in an industry where consumer spending has tightened and competition has intensified.
Wider Industry Shift
Fast-casual and quick-service chains across the sector are adopting similar strategies. Chipotle uses an AI assistant called Ava Cado for hiring, scheduling, and prep planning. Sweetgreen recently introduced data systems to reduce waste and optimize labor. McDonald's and Burger King deploy AI in both customer-facing apps and back-end operations.
For restaurant operators facing margin pressure and heavier competition, these systems are becoming essential tools to run faster, leaner, and more consistently.
