CFDA and OpenAI Launch Program to Connect Fashion Brands With AI Startups

The Council of Fashion Designers of America and OpenAI announced a four-month collaboration program on May 13, pairing six fashion brands with AI developers to build business solutions. The initiative, called "Innovation Hub," kicked off in New York City with live demonstrations from the selected startups.

Six designer-developer teams will work together to address operational and creative challenges specific to fashion businesses. Participating brands include alice + olivia, Araks, Public School, Rebecca Minkoff, SIMKHAI, and Tory Burch. The six AI companies selected are Alta, Cadenova, Curbon, O.Studio Design, OpenStudio, and Raspberry AI.

Funding and Resources

Teams will receive more than $300,000 in combined grant funding, access to OpenAI's APIs and technology tools, and mentorship from OpenAI staff. The program runs for four months after the May 13 launch event.

Developers pitched solutions to a specific prompt: how their technology solves a challenge within fashion and what impact it delivers. After presentations, designers and developers ranked preferred collaborators during one-on-one matching sessions. The CFDA confirmed final pairings based on these rankings.

Broader Adoption Across Fashion

The initiative reflects accelerating AI adoption across the fashion sector. LVMH has expanded partnerships with generative AI companies. Zalando introduced AI-generated visuals for content production. H&M strengthened AI-powered demand forecasting, and Mango incorporated generative AI into product image creation.

AI use cases now extend beyond supply chain and inventory management into design assistance, material innovation, personalized recommendations, and virtual try-ons. AI for Product Development has become central to how fashion companies approach innovation and operational efficiency.

Steven Kolb, President and CEO of the CFDA, said: "Fashion is a powerful driver of culture, innovation, and economic growth. The CFDA remains committed to building an American fashion industry that is forward-looking, inclusive, and positioned to inspire the next generation of global creative leadership."

Charles Porch, Vice President of Global Creative Partnerships at OpenAI, said: "Fashion has always evolved through innovation, creativity, and self-expression, and AI has the potential to become a powerful tool for designers and creators across the industry."
