C.H. Robinson cuts 31% of workforce as AI agents take over logistics work

C.H. Robinson recently offered voluntary buyout packages to high-level managers, the latest round of reductions at the Eden Prairie-based logistics company. Of 160 managers presented with packages, 26 accepted nine months of severance pay.

The company's employment has fallen from 17,399 in 2022 to 11,855 by the end of last fiscal year - a 31% decline. C.H. Robinson has deployed hundreds of agentic AI agents to handle freight processing, replacing manual work across order intake, classification, and scheduling.

What the AI agents do

The agents open and sort freight orders from email, classify shipments, and book pickup and drop-off appointments. Customers benefit from faster processing - orders are accepted and processed more quickly, reducing their costs.

Productivity has increased 40% since 2022, according to the company. The work these systems perform was previously handled by people in manual, repetitive roles.

The broader restructuring picture

C.H. Robinson has not replaced workers who left through normal attrition. The company's typical annual turnover rate of 19% to 24% has accelerated this decline. In the second quarter of 2025, the company announced a restructuring program focused on process optimization and facility consolidation.

Restructuring charges totaled $30.4 million in 2025, mostly from severance expenses. The company expects an additional $50 million to $75 million in charges over the next three years.

C.H. Robinson also divested its European Surface Transportation business last year, further reducing headcount.

Recognition and strategy

Fast Company named C.H. Robinson one of the World's Most Innovative Companies of 2026, citing its "Lean AI" approach to deploying agentic AI. The company said it regularly evaluates its organizational design to align with long-term strategy.

The company said in a statement: "As part of our ongoing focus on continuous improvement, we regularly evaluate our organizational design to ensure it aligns with our long-term strategy. Recently, we offered a voluntary severance program to a limited group of leaders as part of this broader transformation."
