CMA CGM and NYK Deploy AI Across Shipping Operations

CMA CGM and Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) are rolling out major AI initiatives across their shipping and logistics operations. CMA CGM will launch MAIA, an internal AI platform built with Mistral AI, on June 1. NYK is launching SAIL with AI Compass, a companywide program to embed AI into daily work.

CMA CGM's MAIA platform will serve nearly 80,000 employees across the carrier, CEVA Logistics, and CMA Media. The company co-developed the platform with Mistral AI under a five-year partnership signed last year. About 20 Mistral engineers are embedded with CMA CGM teams in Marseille and at CMA Media's headquarters.

What CMA CGM Is Using AI For

CMA CGM already has over 55 AI projects and more than 200 identified use cases running across shipping, logistics, and media. These include vessel route optimization, energy consumption management, arrival time prediction, smart booking systems, and AI-powered customer service tools handling millions of requests annually.

Internally, the company uses Microsoft Copilot and MAIA to automate administrative tasks, analyze documents, and support operational decisions. Rodolphe Saade, CMA CGM's chairman and CEO, is presenting the company's AI strategy at the AI Now Summit in Paris.

NYK's Approach: Building AI-Ready Staff

NYK's SAIL with AI Compass program focuses on building AI capability across the organization without adding significant headcount. The initiative includes NYK AI College, a training platform covering AI literacy and business applications.

NYK plans to create internal knowledge-sharing networks, encourage employees to develop operational AI use cases, and introduce rewards for AI-driven innovation. The program is part of NYK's medium-term management strategy.

For operations professionals, understanding how these carriers are deploying AI in vessel routing, logistics optimization, and decision-making offers practical insights.
