Connecticut Governor to Sign AI and Social Media Safety Law
Connecticut's governor will sign legislation Tuesday morning that establishes new rules for how chatbots operate and how minors use social media platforms. The bill has received bipartisan support.
What chatbots must do
Chatbots will be required to disclose that users are interacting with AI, not a person. If a chatbot detects signs of suicide or self-harm, it must direct the user to mental health resources, including the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
Social media restrictions for minors
Platforms using personalized feeds for users under 18 will face new restrictions. The law requires warning systems to prevent minors from accessing sensitive content.
Parents gain the ability to set time limits on when and how long their children can access certain platforms.
Employment and AI screening
Employers using AI to review job applications must disclose this to candidates. The law prohibits using such software in ways that discriminate based on race or gender.
Managers must notify workers before mass layoffs and specify whether AI or other technological changes drove the decision.
For legal professionals, these provisions create new compliance obligations. Organizations will need to audit hiring practices, update privacy policies, and establish disclosure procedures. AI for Legal professionals covers regulatory requirements like these.
