Crosschq Adds Fraud Detection and AI Fluency Checks to Reference Screening

Crosschq, an AI-powered hiring platform, launched two new modules for its reference checking system: advanced fraud prevention and AI fluency assessment. The additions are designed to catch fabricated references and identify candidates who can work effectively with artificial intelligence.

Candidate fraud in hiring has accelerated. References are being faked, impersonated, or manipulated using AI tools. Traditional reference checks were not built to detect these risks.

Four Fraud Detection Signals

The fraud prevention system flags risks across four areas:

  • Reference Legitimacy - Validates that references are real using email, phone, and LinkedIn employment history verification. Optional government identity checks are available through partners like ID.me.
  • Reference-Raised Concerns - Surfaces non-recommendations, terminations, and ethical or safety issues mentioned during reference calls.
  • Suspicious Activity Detection - Identifies technical anomalies such as shared devices, VPN usage, and overlapping IP addresses that may indicate impersonation.
  • Identity Verification - Provides identity assurance aligned to IAL2 security standards.

These signals appear directly in the reference workflow alongside traditional candidate information.

Assessing AI Readiness

The AI fluency module evaluates how candidates use AI tools on the job, adapt to AI-driven workflows, and work alongside AI from the perspective of peers and managers.

Dr. Heather Myers, Crosschq's Chief Scientific Officer, said the ability to work with AI is becoming a strong predictor of employee success. "Most hiring processes don't measure it," she said. "By embedding AI fluency into reference data, we're capturing real-world behavioral signals that resumes and interviews do not surface."

Tim Sackett, President of HRU Technical Resources, said hiring security will become standard across enterprises. "You might think candidate fraud isn't a big deal until it becomes the biggest issue your company has ever faced," he said. "Every enterprise will be investing in hiring security in the next 24 months."

Reference Checks as Risk Detection

The shift reflects how reference checking is being repositioned. Instead of a backward-looking compliance step, it is becoming a tool for identifying risk and predicting success in roles that require AI skills.

For HR teams managing hiring security and building AI-ready workforces, understanding these new capabilities matters. AI for Human Resources resources can help teams understand how AI is changing recruitment processes. HR leaders may also benefit from AI learning paths designed for CHROs, which cover workforce analytics and talent optimization aligned with these hiring security trends.
