CSX Deploys AI Across Operations, From Pricing to Fleet Management
CSX is using artificial intelligence to cut costs and improve decision-making across its network, with early results showing promise in crew scheduling, vehicle maintenance, and pricing strategy, Chief Financial Officer Kevin Boone said during an investor conference on May 13.
The railroad is running more than 100 initiatives to drive down costs, with AI supporting several key areas. Boone highlighted crew management as particularly promising, given the complexity of tracking workforce trends, retirements, and scheduling across a large operation.
"Managing that workforce, they're our most valuable asset," Boone said. "There's a lot of data involved in that - understanding how the workforce is trending, retirements, all those things that AI is just really right for."
Fleet Maintenance and Safety
CSX spent more than $13,000 per truck on maintenance last year. The railroad is using GPS tracking and data tools to monitor vehicle maintenance costs and driver behavior.
When CSX began monitoring vehicles, drivers regularly exceeded 90 mph. Last week, the railroad recorded zero instances of speeding. That reduction matters for both wear and tear and safety.
Boone cautioned that maintaining these gains requires deliberate effort. "I've seen us do this before where you go after a cost area, and you talk a lot about it, and then you move on to the next one. And then the costs creep back into the system."
Pricing and Intermodal Growth
AI is also improving CSX's pricing visibility. "Early signs are very encouraging on giving us more visibility on pricing and how we go to market," Boone said.
The completion of the Howard Street Tunnel project has opened capacity for intermodal growth. CSX projects it could gain 75,000 to 125,000 additional loads on that route, though the railroad expects results over two to three bid cycles.
The Southeast Mexico Express service, a joint operation with CPKC, represents another growth opportunity. CPKC invested $58 million into the underlying rail line, with CSX making similar investments to improve service speed and efficiency.
