CTIA Calls for National AI and Wireless Strategy as Infrastructure Demands Surge
The wireless industry is pushing for a unified federal approach to AI and spectrum policy, arguing that coordinated action is necessary to keep the U.S. competitive as the two technologies converge.
A new CTIA report projects that 75% of smartphones will run AI within two years, and that AI will account for 30% of all broadband traffic by 2034. The U.S. experienced record wireless traffic growth in 2025, setting the stage for infrastructure demands that require planning now.
Where Physical AI Changes the Game
The convergence matters most where AI moves beyond answering questions to taking action in physical spaces. Robots, drones, and intelligent machines will work alongside humans in factories, hospitals, and public safety operations - all dependent on low-latency wireless connections.
CTIA President and CEO Ajit Pai said in the report: "To lead this next era, America needs larger, contiguous blocks of mid-band spectrum, more infrastructure, and a unified national approach."
What the CTIA Wants from Policymakers
The organization outlined four priorities:
- Expedite the 800-megahertz spectrum pipeline, including the FCC's planned 2027 C-Band auction and progress on 2.7 GHz bands
- Designate the 4 GHz and 6/7 GHz bands for licensed use to provide the large, contiguous spectrum blocks that 6G requires
- Replace state-by-state permitting rules with nationwide standards for infrastructure deployment
- Pair infrastructure policy with tax incentives that encourage investment
6G Development Is Already Underway
The National Telecommunications and Information Administration met with wireless and networking experts in March to assess how developers will integrate AI into 6G networks currently in development. Wireless networks have already achieved 30% efficiency gains, and AI-native 6G systems promise further improvements.
For IT and development professionals managing network infrastructure, understanding these shifts matters. The timeline is compressed - spectrum decisions made now will shape what's possible in production systems within years, not decades.
