Cupertino requires all city employees to complete AI training by September
The City of Cupertino launched an organization-wide AI training program this month, requiring all employees to complete the course by the end of September. The initiative aims to help staff use artificial intelligence tools to handle routine tasks more efficiently, freeing time to focus on resident services.
City Manager Tina Kapoor said the program represents an investment in staff capabilities. "Technology is evolving quickly, and as a Silicon Valley community, we have a responsibility to approach it thoughtfully and responsibly," Kapoor said.
The city is adopting Microsoft Copilot as its official AI platform. The system operates within existing city infrastructure and meets data protection standards.
Planned AI applications across city services
Beyond workforce training, Cupertino is piloting several AI tools for internal and public-facing operations:
- An AI-powered planning assistant to help staff navigate zoning and development regulations
- A resident chatbot providing access to city information and services
- Internal search tools that help employees locate information across city records
- Real-time translation for public meetings to expand multilingual access
- An AI-assisted accessibility solution to make public documents more compliant with ADA requirements
These projects address operational efficiency, accessibility, and transparency across city services.
