From ITI to Industry: Delhi Youth to Receive Training in AI, Robotics, and Green Tech

The Delhi government is investing Rs. 170 crore to upgrade 15 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) by introducing courses in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, Electric Vehicle (EV) maintenance, and Green Energy. This initiative aims to equip young students with skills relevant to emerging industries and future employment opportunities. The announcement was made at the Regional Conference of Skill Ministers in Chandigarh, hosted by the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE).

“This upgrade is Delhi's pledge to turn every hand into a skilled hand, every skilled hand into an entrepreneur,” said Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa.

Hub-and-Spoke Model for ITI Overhaul

The plan designates ITI Pusa, ITI Shahdara, and ITI Mangolpuri as hub institutes, each supporting four spoke campuses. These institutes will feature smart classrooms, simulation labs, blended-learning modules, and mandatory internships. The project aligns with the National Scheme for ITI Upgradation, a Rs. 60,000 crore effort co-financed by the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank, focused on industry-led governance and outcome-based funding for vocational training.

“Delhi's upgraded ITIs will equip our youth with 21st-century competencies so that they graduate as job-creators, not just job-seekers,” Minister Sirsa added.

Strengthening Industry Linkages and Placement Opportunities

To oversee infrastructure, faculty training, placements, and data integration with the Skill India Digital Hub, three Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) will be set up in partnership with industry stakeholders. Placement efforts are already active, with the Model Career Centre at Pusa registering over 7,000 youth and successfully placing 2,122 candidates at companies such as Tata Electronics, JBM, L&T Constructions, Lemon Tree Hotels, and PVR.

Existing Centres of Excellence and Training Progress

Delhi has established Centres of Excellence (CoEs) at ITIs in Dheerpur, Mayur Vihar, and Pusa focusing on Industrial Automation, Robotics, and Welding. Official figures show:

  • 1,883 trainees have completed training through PMKVY-4.0 skill hubs.
  • 1,393 artisans have been certified under the PM Vishwakarma Yojana.
  • More than 1,000 women have been trained at the community level through Jan Shikshan Sansthan in Jahangirpuri.

Looking Ahead: Skill Roadmap 2.0

The Delhi government outlined upcoming steps under Skill Roadmap 2.0, including:

  • Apprenticeship-enabled degree programs at Delhi Skill and Entrepreneurship University (DSEU) and Delhi Technological University (DTU).
  • Quarterly Apprenticeship Melas offering additional stipend support for women and persons with disabilities.
  • Deployment of mobile skilling vans equipped with solar rigs and VR welding simulators.
  • Setting up Entrepreneurship and Innovation Cells in hub ITIs, connected with funding schemes like MUDRA, PMEGP, and SIDBI.

“By integrating EV, AI, Robotics, and Green Energy modules into the ITI curriculum, we are creating the launchpad for our youth to make Delhi and Bharat future-ready,” said Minister Sirsa.
