EAEU nations adopt joint statement prioritizing safety in AI development
The Eurasian Economic Union adopted a joint statement on artificial intelligence development at the Astana Forum, with member states committing to prioritize safety and ethics over implementation speed across economic sectors.
Deputy Minister of Economy and Commerce Sultan Akhmatov announced the agreement, which represents a coordinated approach among EAEU members-Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan-on how the bloc will approach AI governance.
What the statement covers
The joint statement shifts focus from rapid AI deployment to responsible development practices. Rather than racing to implement AI systems, member states agreed to embed safety considerations and ethical frameworks into their economic policies from the start.
The approach applies across sectors, not just technology companies. This means AI adoption in finance, manufacturing, energy, and other industries will follow shared safety standards.
Timing and context
The announcement comes as Kyrgyzstan prepares to assume the EAEU chairmanship in 2026. The bloc has been negotiating new trade agreements with third countries and working to balance market liberalization with domestic producer protection.
The AI statement signals the union's intention to develop its own governance framework rather than simply adopting approaches from other regions.
