Igniting Innovation: Empowering Teaching and Learning with AI

On 30 May 2025, Ha Noi hosted the National Forum on Artificial Intelligence in Education, co-organized by UNICEF Viet Nam, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), Viet Nam National Innovation Center (NIC), and STEAM for Viet Nam. This event established a multi-stakeholder platform aimed at accelerating AI capacity building within the education sector.

The forum supports MOET’s 2025 National Plan, which focuses on enhancing digital and AI competencies for teachers and education managers. This initiative aligns with the State Party’s Resolution 57, emphasizing science, technology, innovation, and high-quality human resources to meet the national growth target of at least 8% in 2025 and to position Viet Nam as a high-income country by 2045, with a vision extending to 2050.

The Plan outlines a clear roadmap for equipping teachers and school leaders with the skills needed to integrate AI effectively into teaching and school management.

Vice Minister Phạm Ngọc Thưởng of MOET stressed the importance of using AI proactively, independently, and ethically. He noted that the Ministry will continue to develop thematic content in collaboration with UNICEF and other partners to implement the AI Strategy in education through ongoing training and professional development.

Among the new initiatives in the Plan is a National Showcase Day, designed to celebrate innovative educators and highlight best practices in digital transformation.

UNICEF Viet Nam has been a strategic partner in MOET’s digital transformation efforts. Over the last four years, UNICEF has contributed to developing the National AI Strategy for Education up to 2035, Digital Competency Frameworks for teachers and students, and AI skill-building programs for educators and managers.

UNICEF has also piloted AI-powered classroom tools, including assistive technologies for children with disabilities, gamified learning platforms, and AI-driven resources that promote inclusive education.

Silvia Danailov, UNICEF Representative in Viet Nam, highlighted the broad partnerships supporting Viet Nam’s education innovation, including collaboration with ed-tech organizations like STEAM for Viet Nam. She emphasized the commitment to ethical, inclusive, and responsible AI use, with a focus on equity, child protection, and digital wellbeing.

Tran To Uyen, Co-founder and Country Director of STEAM for Viet Nam, shared the success story from Điện Biên province, where 100% of teachers received free AI training. This achievement demonstrates that teachers, regardless of location or social conditions, can master AI technology and extend its benefits to students nationwide. STEAM for Viet Nam plans to scale this model to reach every teacher across the country.

Jonathan Baker, UNESCO Representative in Viet Nam, also contributed insights on UNESCO’s AI initiatives in education during the forum.
