The Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute has completed a six-day training program for federal government employees, building practical AI skills to improve public service delivery. The initiative, held in partnership with Addis Ababa University and the United Nations Development Programme, concluded on July 4, 2026, and supports Ethiopia's broader digital transformation strategy.
The 'AI for Government' training programme focused on equipping public sector workers with abilities to apply artificial intelligence in daily operations. Sessions covered core AI concepts, generative AI systems and prompt engineering, with hands-on practice to integrate tools into government workflows.
At the closing ceremony, Deputy Director General Yitagesu Desalegn encouraged participants to "apply the acquired knowledge to enhance productivity and drive innovation within your respective institutions."
Plans for national rollout
Officials said the programme has already reached government employees in the Dire Dawa City Administration and the Sidama National Regional State. Plans are underway to extend the initiative across the country as part of Ethiopia's digital transformation strategy.
Why this matters for government professionals
Ethiopia's approach demonstrates that when AI training is built around real government workflows, public sector workers can quickly apply new skills to cut processing times and improve citizen-facing services. As similar programmes expand, government employees who understand how to use generative AI and prompt engineering will be better positioned to modernise public service delivery.
