Fiserv and OpenAI bring AI agents into banks' core systems
Fiserv and OpenAI are partnering to embed AI deeper into financial institutions' operations. The collaboration, developed with Amazon Web Services, centers on agentOS-an operating system that lets banks deploy and manage AI agents across core banking, payments, and transaction processing. Six financial institutions are already building agents with Fiserv, with two running pilots ahead of a wider August launch.
What this means for operations teams
The partnership addresses a real gap in the banking industry. Large banks have built proprietary AI capabilities internally, but smaller institutions and credit unions lack the resources to do the same. agentOS lets these smaller players access enterprise-grade AI without building from scratch.
Operations teams can use the platform to automate two types of work. Customer-facing agents could power budgeting assistants or spending trackers. Back-office agents could flag suspicious transactions without blocking legitimate payments-a task that traditionally requires manual review and slows payment processing.
Banks have historically spent years and significant budgets modernizing legacy systems. agentOS targets these expensive, time-consuming projects by providing pre-built infrastructure that smaller institutions can deploy quickly.
Broader industry pressure
The deal reflects rising competitive pressure across banking. As fintech providers like Fiserv integrate AI into their platforms, banks increasingly face expectations to adopt these capabilities to stay competitive on efficiency, security, and digital performance.
For community banks and credit unions that rely on Fiserv for core infrastructure, the shift means accessing advanced AI through their existing technology partners rather than building proprietary systems internally.
