Five Franconian Universities Form European AI Research Consortium
Five universities in Franconia have joined ELLIS, Europe's leading machine learning and artificial intelligence network. The Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, University of Technology Nuremberg, University of Bamberg, and University of Bayreuth will operate as ELLIS Unit Franconia, with the first three institutions leading the consortium.
ELLIS announced the new unit on May 18, 2026, alongside six others across Europe. The network now includes 44 units involving 150 institutions stretching from Sweden to Portugal.
What This Means for Researchers
Membership opens access to Europe's established AI research infrastructure and creates formal channels for collaboration across borders. Researchers gain opportunities for joint projects, shared resources, and talent exchange within a structured network rather than through informal partnerships.
Würzburg's participation centers on its Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (CAIDAS), which will anchor the unit's research activities.
The Broader Network
ELLIS operates as a federation of independent research units, each focusing on machine learning and AI. The seven new units announced alongside Franconia are based in Czechia, Denmark, Grenoble, North Rhine-Westphalia, Slovenia, and Sweden.
For researchers in science and technology roles, AI for Science & Research resources can help develop skills relevant to collaborative research environments like ELLIS.
