Meet Goku: Shanghai’s Quant Fund with AI Ambitions Beyond Finance

Goku Technologies, a quantitative trading fund based in Shanghai, is expanding its focus beyond financial markets. The firm is now channeling efforts into artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool to address broader scientific and societal challenges. CEO Wang Xiao emphasizes that their AI work is driven by a vision larger than immediate commercial gains.

“What I believe is [AI exists] to solve issues for humanity – this is the only thing that matters,” Wang said, reflecting the company’s long-term perspective.

Launching AllMind: AI for Scientific Discovery

Last month, Goku unveiled Shanghai AllMind Artificial Intelligence Technology, a subsidiary dedicated to AI research. This move invites comparisons to High-Flyer Quant’s DeepSeek, another Chinese hedge fund’s AI spin-off launched in 2023.

However, Wang highlights that AllMind is following a different path. Unlike DeepSeek or major tech companies such as Alibaba, which focus on building AI models from scratch, AllMind aims to act as a catalyst for AI-assisted scientific discovery. The focus is less about competing directly in the AI model space and more about applying AI to accelerate research breakthroughs.

Innovating in AI Training Techniques

Goku attracted attention recently by publishing a research paper detailing a novel AI training method. This approach combines supervised fine-tuning with reinforcement learning, two techniques widely used by top AI organizations like OpenAI. The method promises to enhance AI model training efficiency and effectiveness, potentially benefiting both finance and scientific domains.

For finance professionals and researchers interested in AI’s applications, Goku’s work signals a growing trend of quantitative funds branching into scientific AI innovation. As AI tools become increasingly integral to research and trading, initiatives like AllMind may offer new examples of practical AI deployment beyond typical commercial uses.
