Google brings Gemini app to Mac as native desktop tool
Google released the Gemini app for macOS today, making its AI assistant available as a native desktop application. The tool works on Mac versions 15 and up at no cost and launches with a keyboard shortcut (Option + Space) from anywhere on the desktop.
Share your screen for instant analysis
The macOS version lets users share windows or local files directly with Gemini. A product manager at Google described a use case: reviewing a complex chart and asking Gemini to identify the three biggest takeaways, getting a summary instantly.
This works for creative projects too. Users can share their screen to get feedback or suggestions without leaving their current application.
Stay focused without switching windows
The app eliminates the friction of alt-tabbing between applications. Someone drafting a market report can summon Gemini to verify a date. A person building a spreadsheet can ask for a formula. Both get answers and return to work immediately.
Creatives can generate images with Nano Banana or create videos with Veo without breaking their workflow.
What's next
Google positioned this as a foundation for a broader desktop assistant. The company said it plans to share more capabilities in coming months.
