Google DeepMind establishes Seoul campus, signs research partnership with South Korea
Google DeepMind will open its first AI campus in Seoul this year and commit to joint research with South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT across life sciences, climate, and AI safety. Demis Hassabis, the company's CEO, signed the memorandum of understanding on Monday at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul - the same venue where AlphaGo defeated Go master Lee Se-dol in 2016.
The 1,980-square-meter campus in Gangnam-gu will serve as a hub connecting Google DeepMind researchers with Korean startups and scientists. Hassabis met with executives from Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, Hyundai Motor, and LG Electronics during the visit to discuss expanded collaboration.
Research priorities under the agreement
The partnership centers on three areas: joint AI research to support scientific discovery, talent development for the next generation of AI researchers, and establishing safety frameworks for responsible AI development.
The National Science AI Research Center, launching next month, will serve as a primary platform for the work. Both sides plan to conduct joint research on AI safety models, promote researcher exchanges, and create internship opportunities for Korean AI talent at Google DeepMind's facilities.
Cooperation will focus on applications in life sciences, weather prediction, and AI systems designed to accelerate scientific discovery. The ministry and Google DeepMind will also develop and validate AI models together and explore AI-driven bio innovation research initiatives.
Connection to K-Moonshot initiative
The agreement aligns with South Korea's K-Moonshot project, a national effort combining AI with science and technology to address key challenges. The government aims to double AI-powered research productivity by 2030 and resolve 12 national missions across eight strategic sectors including advanced biology, materials science, quantum technologies, and semiconductors by 2035.
Deputy Prime Minister and ICT Minister Bae Kyung-hoon said the MOU represents "a pivotal milestone for Korea to accelerate AI innovation centered on K-Moonshot." Hassabis framed the partnership as building on AlphaGo's legacy to "push the boundaries of bio innovation and weather prediction, while also exploring the guardrails needed to guide the responsible development of AI."
Governance and oversight
A joint working group will oversee implementation, with quarterly video meetings and annual in-person meetings to discuss specific projects. The agreement includes cooperation on AI safety governance, with both sides conducting joint research on safety frameworks and safeguards for AI models.
Hassabis also met President Lee Jae Myung to discuss AI prospects, including global safeguards and basic income policies for an AI-reshaped society. The timing - ahead of the 10th anniversary of the AlphaGo match - positions the agreement as a continuation of South Korea's role in defining the AI era.
For researchers and scientists, opportunities include AI for Science & Research training and AI Research Courses to build capabilities in these emerging collaboration areas.
