Google is introducing new artificial intelligence features across Google Classroom, Gemini, and NotebookLM that require educators to approve and guide student interactions. The updates shift control of classroom AI tools directly to teachers, addressing concerns about student distraction and curriculum alignment.
Teacher-controlled AI environments
Google is adding teacher-led activities to Guided Learning in Gemini, study notebooks, and NotebookLM. Educators select the specific class materials that inform these AI activities, keeping the content tied to their teaching goals.
Teachers can lock student screens to approved tools using Focus Mode in Chromebook Class tools. A new Guided Learning toggle will allow instructors to provide real-time support during class while blocking outside distractions.
NotebookLM will convert class materials into interactive flashcards and audio summaries. Study notebooks will generate bite-sized lessons and adaptive quizzes based on the teacher's chosen curriculum.
Connecting AI to existing classroom data
Google is launching a connected Classroom app in Gemini. This tool uses existing assignments, grades, and materials to analyze student progress and draft activities.
The company plans to release a Google Classroom Model Context Protocol server in the coming months. This will allow external educational technology platforms to securely reference Classroom context within their own software.
Google said that data used in these features remains secure and is not used to train its AI models.
Training and adoption
Google for Education is growing its training programs to help instructors adopt these tools. The Google AI Educator Series, developed with ISTE and ASCD, aims to provide AI training to all six million U.S. educators.
Google said, "The best classrooms are built around teachers and their students."
Why this matters for education professionals
These updates give educators direct oversight of how students interact with generative AI. By requiring teachers to select source materials and lock screens to specific applications, school districts can deploy AI tools with reduced risk of off-task behavior or inaccurate content.
