Trump Administration Rules Out New AI Oversight Agency
The Trump administration will not create a dedicated government agency to oversee advanced artificial intelligence models, White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said Monday.
Instead, officials are coordinating with private companies to prevent AI systems from causing harm before release. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross, and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles are leading these efforts.
The decision follows a Bloomberg report about a draft executive order that could expand existing cybersecurity information-sharing programs to cover AI companies and emerging threats.
What Happens Next
President Trump has not yet decided whether to issue an executive order or keep the current oversight system in place, Hassett said. He added that recent weeks have brought progress through government-private sector collaboration.
For government officials, this approach signals a preference for industry self-regulation over new regulatory bodies. Understanding how AI for Government frameworks develop will be essential as policy takes shape.
Those working on AI policy should also familiarize themselves with Generative AI and LLM capabilities to evaluate what oversight mechanisms make sense for different model types.
