Hyatt Shifts AI Search to Capture Customers Earlier in Booking Process
Hyatt redesigned its website search to intercept travelers before they've decided where to go. The hotel chain replaced its traditional city-date-room type interface with a generative AI system that asks customers what kind of trip they want, then recommends destinations and properties.
Hyatt President and CEO Mark Hoplamazian announced the shift at the International Hotel Investment Forum in Berlin on Monday. The company made the change more than a year ago to capture what Hoplamazian called "traveler intent" - the moment when customers know they want to travel but haven't yet selected a destination.
Why Intent Capture Matters for Direct Bookings
For hotel chains, this timing is critical. Customers who express intent early are more likely to book directly rather than shop competitors. They're also more likely to remain within the hotel group's ecosystem once a destination is suggested.
The shift addresses a longstanding sales problem: most hotel websites wait for customers to arrive with decisions already made. By that point, customers have often compared prices across multiple platforms and loyalty programs. Hyatt's approach tries to influence the decision before that comparison shopping begins.
How the AI Interface Works
Instead of entering "New York, March 15-18, one room," customers now describe what they're seeking: a beach getaway, a city break, a wellness retreat. The AI then suggests properties that match the stated intent.
This approach serves sales teams in two ways. First, it increases the likelihood of direct bookings, which carry higher margins than third-party bookings. Second, it feeds customer intent data back into the system, helping sales and marketing teams understand what travelers actually want rather than inferring it from search patterns.
