Hyundai Motor Group Plans to Test Products Using AI-Powered Virtual Consumers

Hyundai Motor Group announced plans to pre-test unreleased vehicles by simulating consumer behavior in a virtual environment, replacing traditional market research panels with AI agents. The company presented the strategy at the Amazon Web Services Summit Seoul on May 20.

The approach uses AI agents equipped with virtual personas to interact with products in a simulated world built on physics-based models. These agents will mimic human behavior-using products and writing reviews-to predict how real consumers might respond before a vehicle launches.

How the Simulation Works

Hyundai transfers products and consumers into a virtual environment designed to replicate real-world conditions. AI agents then test the vehicles and generate feedback, creating a digital equivalent of the consumer panel surveys companies currently run with small groups of people.

The simulation delivers faster results and lower costs than building prototypes and conducting traditional panel surveys. Market research that typically takes weeks can compress into days.

Part of Broader AI Strategy

The project falls under Hyundai Motor Group's "AI Transformation" (AX) vision and uses the company's in-house AI agent called AIMI. Hyundai developed AIMI with Amazon Web Services and subsidiary Hyundai AutoEver for business applications including marketing and product planning.

AIMI is already handling web-based market research tasks. The virtual consumer simulation represents an expansion of the agent's responsibilities within a new AI-driven product planning system.

Sunwoo Kyung-hee, head of Hyundai Motor Group's Market Intelligence Center, said the company will "plan products with future market competitiveness by testing demand from virtual consumers who reflect the personalities of real consumers."

The company acknowledged the approach is still in development, with substantial plans ahead.
