IBM expands free AI training program to reach UK workforce across all levels

IBM has launched a new artificial intelligence learning pathway within SkillsBuild, its free global education program, designed to train workers from entry-level employees to senior executives and policymakers. The courses will help the British workforce build skills needed in an AI-driven economy.

The expansion supports the UK Government's AI Skills Boost initiative, which aims to retrain 10 million workers by 2030. IBM serves as a founding partner of the government's AI Skills Hub.

What the curriculum covers

The program structures training across multiple levels. Entry-level courses introduce large language models and prompt engineering, along with ethical considerations for using generative AI tools responsibly.

Intermediate learners progress to data analytics, risk management, and fraud detection using IBM's watsonx technology. Advanced modules cover machine learning, natural language processing, and AI solution development.

Responsible AI principles-including ethics, bias mitigation, and governance-are embedded throughout all levels.

New leadership module for executives and policymakers

IBM introduced a dedicated Level 6 pathway for senior leaders and decision-makers. This module focuses on understanding AI's strategic impact on business and government, leading responsible AI adoption at scale, and shaping governance frameworks.

The level aims to help executives make informed decisions about AI investments while managing emerging risks.

The business case

According to IBM's 2025 CEO Study, 77% of surveyed CEOs expect positive returns from scaled AI investments. However, 30% of the workforce will require retraining or reskilling within three years.

Kanishka Narayan, Minister for AI and Online Safety, said: "Partners like IBM are absolutely key to making high-quality AI training accessible to working people at every level, from the shop floor to the boardroom."

Leon Butler, Chief Executive of IBM UKI, added: "AI is transforming every industry and opening up new opportunities to innovate. With this expanded pathway, we are helping to build a workforce that understands why digital technologies will be critical to accelerating adoption."

The program is available free through AI for Education initiatives and IBM SkillsBuild.
