IBM Expands AI Training Program for University Students With Global Challenge

IBM announced the AI Builders Challenge on June 3, 2026, a competition that gives university students hands-on experience with IBM Bob, the company's AI-powered development tool. The challenge addresses a documented gap: 63 percent of faculty surveyed by the American Association of Colleges and Universities said graduates were not prepared to use generative AI in the workplace.

The competition is open to students 18 and older across participating countries, regardless of major. Participants can work individually or in teams, submit projects through GitHub, and access mentorship via Discord and webinars. IBM is offering a $15,000 prize pool, with a $5,000 grand prize for the top project.

How the Challenge Works

Students will build projects tied to real-world themes: creative industries, space exploration, and workplace transformation. The challenge runs in two monthly competitions, launching July 1 and August 1, with entries due July 31 and August 31.

Unlike earlier code-generation tools, IBM Bob integrates orchestration, execution, and governance into development workflows. For students, this means learning to apply AI across the full software development lifecycle, not just for faster coding.

Winners will be judged on technical execution, innovation, challenge fit, implementation, and feasibility. The grand prize winner receives an invitation to IBM TechXchange, IBM's annual developer conference.

Wider Access to IBM Bob

IBM is making IBM Bob available free to 20,000 post-secondary institutions worldwide through IBM SkillsBuild, its free learning platform. The move reflects IBM's goal to train 30 million people in AI skills by 2030.

Students completing projects through the challenge can add portfolio-ready work to showcase to employers. Registration opened June 3.

For developers looking to strengthen AI skills, AI for Software Developers offers structured training in integrating AI tools into development workflows.
